![]() Based on experience, this has always sufficed for me when playing in a band with others. I just follow the tabs, keep my tempo, and that's it. When I play a song, I don't even know what chords are being used. I don't even know how to locate notes on the fretboard and I have zero knowledge in scales or chords. That being said, I have no idea what notes I'm actually playing. I've actually done this several times before. If a friend called me up and said that they needed a Bass player to play a few cover songs with their band, I could definitely do it as long as I have the tabs and the YouTube tutorials. While I may not be the fastest or most technical Bass player, I feel like my skills on the instrument are more than adequate for the type of songs that I play (Modern Pop Songs, Beatles Songs, etc.). ![]() Once I know the positions and I can play it on the Bass, I'm good to go. All I do is memorize the pattern of the verses, chorus, and the bridge. In a song, I usually need to memorize 3 patterns only. I google the tabs online, I match the tabs with the song on my earphones and compare it with an online tutorial on YouTube, and I memorize the notes. When I learn a new song, I follow 3 simple steps. However, I have zero theoretical knowledge on how to actually play the bass. I know how to "play" the Bass in the sense that I know how to use the instrument.
